Our Story: Madame Alexander Doll Company

Our Story_1250x500

The Madame Alexander Doll Company has been making high-quality dolls that have been passed down from generation to generation for 100 years. A true American original, Madame Alexander knew the potential of doll play and its power to make the world a kinder place. Today, her legacy lives on in every doll we create.

Female Founded, Female Empowered

In 1923, at the age of 28, Madame Beatrice Alexander Behrman founded the Alexander Doll Company. Having grown up in her stepfather’s doll hospital on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, she believed dolls should be played with and loved—without breaking like the porcelain dolls of her time, and without sacrificing details or quality. With her desire to make dolls that last along with her keen understanding of the value of doll play in teaching children kindness and compassion, Madame Alexander not only fulfilled her dream, but her dolls have been a part of American life for generations.

Madame was not just an artist, she was also a pioneer in a male-dominated business world. The American original introduced many toy industry firsts and even emerged from the Great Depression with a new, larger factory space. The dream of one hard working woman set the Alexander Doll Company on a flourishing path that still shapes the lives of children and collectors today.

“You need to believe in people’s dreams, especially women’s.”

Iconic Dolls

Madame went on to create iconic dolls that reflected history, culture, literature and art. Storybooks were brought to life with dolls such as Alice in Wonderland and Gone with the Wind’s Scarlett O’Hara. International dolls honored beauty in many different cultures and transported doll lovers to distant lands. The Alexander Doll Company grew to become a world-renowned doll maker known for quality and exquisite detail.

The Alexander Doll Company has been heavily celebrated throughout popular culture. Our dolls have been featured in the Smithsonian Museum, and in 2000, Madame Alexander was inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame. Partnerships with famous names from fashion and film produced collaborations with brands such as Disney, DC Comics, Warner Brothers, and Isaac Mizrahi. Our company has always been driven to create dolls with meaning and significance, reflecting important moments in history and culture.
